The cultural mediators of Caumont Centre d’Art - Coralyne, Eleonora, Lisa, Sophie and Sophie - invite you to discover the exhibition dedicated to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), an emblematic figure of the Parisian avant-garde at the end of the 19th century and one of the leading artists of the Belle Époque.

Step into the fascinating world of Toulouse-Lautrec: the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre’s streets, the excitement of the cabarets, and the splendour of Parisian nightlife. A brilliant draughtsman, painter and lithographer, the artist transformed celebrities and ordinary people alike into true modern icons through instantly recognisable posters and portraits.

Bringing together nearly one hundred works, the exhibition highlights the modernity of Toulouse-Lautrec’s vision and his major role in the evolution of artistic poster design. Influenced by Japonism and Art Nouveau, he revolutionised the art of lithography by developing a bold and highly distinctive visual language, perfectly suited to the rise of modern advertising.

Throughout his career, Toulouse-Lautrec also explored the art of portraiture through a wide variety of figures, striving above all to reveal the personality and temperament of his subjects rather than a mere physical likeness. Through an expressive and sometimes caricatural approach, he captured with sincerity the humanity of those around him in daring compositions filled with vibrant colours.
